Why should this propensity to seek beauty in darkness be so strong only in Orientals? The West too has known a time when there was no electricity, gas, or petroleum, yet so far as I know the West has never been disposed to delight in shadows . Japanese ghosts have traditionally no feet; Western ghosts have feet, but are transparent. As even this trifle suggests, pitch darkness has always occupied our fantasies, while in the West even ghosts are clear as glass. This is true too of our household...

Oh, boy! Seems like it's time for 11th (well, 12th) release on Sound & Motion! But this time, there's a little twist... You might remember RealiTVersion from last year's "So Far" LP, which featured some new artists that collaborated with the netlabel. He created "Cold Sea" with Armida, and he also remixed Playground's "Spleen". Both tracks were well received, so we decided to give him a release. He replied to us by e-mail, just writing "Ok, soon!"....

XGN022 comes from a man who's well known for his solid production and atmospheric creations on labels such as Covert Operations, Nerve, Offshore, Breakbeat Science and Orgone. ICR delivers two drum soaked tracks, both with the crisp breaks, subtle melodies and deep pads which are often found in his sound. 'Shinumade Tatakau', the A side to this release features a well executed Japanese/Samurai vibe with the subtle percussion flowing amongst the sharp, intense drumwork. Diligent pads and hard...

The Malware Museum is a collection of malware programs, usually viruses, that were distributed in the 1980s and 1990s on home computers. Once they infected a system, they would sometimes show animation or messages that you had been infected. Through the use of emulations, and additionally removing any destructive routines within the viruses, this collection allows you to experience virus infection of decades ago with safety.

Paul Naschy, Spain's superstar of horror, starred as a number of maniacal monsters during his most prolific period (1968-1973). He'd appear as a mummy, Count Dracula, a deranged hunchback, and his most famous role of Waldemar Daninsky, the doomed werewolf. After directing several successful "El Hombre Lobo" romps for Naschy, León Klimovsky was back on hand for this undead entry, known in Spain as LA REBELION DE LAS MUERTAS. Classic sci-fi from 1961. A rocket crashes on an invisible planet during an investigation. The surviving astronaut encounters a race of miniature people: the women are VERY interested! The low budget belies the fact films like this were thematically the precursor to modern sci-fi. Dub from a 16mm film reel that was once part of The University of Kansas research into developing ejection seats for aircraft. This film is a study of the stress involved with rapid decelaration on human subjects. The film may have originally been a NASA research reel, this film also has no audio track and is silent.

Found footage on a VHS tape of a very early TV show about the Internet from Japan. Please write to me at carl at media.org if you have details. At about 2' in, there was a one-minute blank gap that was edited out. The show features Jun Murai, the Internet Samurai, in one of his first television appearances.
